TalkTalk Huawei EchoLife HG521: Info, Configuration & Use with Other ISPs

Hello! This time, we have a Huawei EchoLife HG521 provided by the ISP TalkTalk based upon a chipset by Realtek (more details here ). It is quite a nice ADSL Wireless (upto Wireless N 300Mbps with good range) Router despite its small size and only one Ethernet/LAN port. There is a review of the same available  here . However, unlike the generic version, this one is 'locked' to TalkTalk as it does not accept other dsl username(s) ... unless you edit the configuration file or replace the firmware :) Method 1: Editing the Configuration File (may also work for ones by AOL, ttnet, etc) - Login to the router's web interface (default username: admin, password: admin in this case) - Click Advanced (To continue reading, please click on 'Read More')

BT Home Hub v1 and v1.5 2/2: Thomson CLI and Voice Features

Hello Again! Although the home hub (HH) routers can be both configured via the web interface and the configuration wizard software (see part 1  here ), there is another 'hidden' powerful tool in the form of CLI that not only provides configuration options but many extra options too. In order to use the CLI interface, one needs to have a Telnet Client in the form of the client built into WindowsOS or a separate utility like PuTTY . The CLI Reference, uploaded at http://1drv.ms/1NlbDf6 , shall also come in handy. An example for changing the DNS Server Addresses : telnet 192.168.1.254 dns server route ? dns server route list dns server route add dns = 199.85.126.20 metric = 5 intf = Internet dns server route add dns = 8.26.56.26 metric = 7 intf = Internet - I have used the DNS Server Address of Norton DNS and Comodo DNS respectively in this case as an example ... replace with your own  - The 'Metric' can be thought of as prior...

TalkTalk D-Link DSL-2780: Info and Use with Other ISPs

Hello! I actually wanted to write about the BT ones first starting with older (but still relevant) models and come to D-Link later but upon receiving many requests, I have decided to write about this particular model first!!! This is a good router (I tried it out for some time) provided by TalkTalk to its customers! It is also found 'dumped' here in Pakistan along with all the other routers. It has some good specifications as well! There is a review of it over here . So, how do you use it with other ISPs that require usernames (for dsl) not allowed by this router??? All one has to do is to configure the router using the 'Setup Wizard' and just click OK for the popup that pops up when you have to input the username for your dsl connection (any modern browser should disregard it). Then, after a few seconds, you are presented with the next page of the wizard! This method also works on the DSL-2680!!! Note: For tweaking the default settings like MTU and Di...

BT Home Hub v1 and v1.5 1/2: Info, Unlock & Configuration

Hello Again! Some pictures of the BT Home Hub (version 1): And some pictures of BT Home Hub v1.5: And they also come in Black!!! The Home Hub v1 and Home Hub v1.5 are adsl wireless routers that were provided by UK ISP BT to their customers made by Thomson/Inventel (aka Technicolor/Alcatel) quite some time ago. The specifications are listed here  under the Hardware section. You can still find them 'dumped' here in Pakistan ... some packaged nicely in their boxes as shown above ... and more importantly, mostly in good working condition. I remember getting them both several years ago (when I didn't know anything about unlocking) and the disappointment when I realized that they were locked to BT*.  At that time, these were the most featured devices available here locally not to mention great looking as well. Sadly, had to be stored away. Unlike me however, other people didn't give up and when PsiDOC came along, a whole co...

Free Zong 4G LTE Sim Offer

Updated: Turns out Zong is no better with "missing" balance issues! Back to Telenor who now have 4G as well (dealing with the original issue with Telenor by using the Spam Filter)! Hello! A couple of days ago, I received a call from Zong's customer support number 310 asking for my home address to deliver their 4G LTE SIM free of cost as I am a valuable customer (according) to them. I had ported over to Zong from Telenor few months ago (due to Telenor's failure to stop in an agreeable manner, despite my repeated requests and help from the regulator PTA, their barrage of promotional messages and illegal promotional robo-calls) but hadn't selected the 4G capable SIM. So, I was quite happy to accept this offer and to my surprise, it was delivered the very next day as promised via TCS at no cost. Here are some pictures (with my details blanked out of course): Selected Micro-SIM as per my mobile phone! With my 'old' SIM in the phone, I ha...

Thomson/Alcatel/Technicolor SpeedTouch ST585v6sl: Info, Unlock and Configuration

This ( click here for some device info) was quite a popular router for ISPs and comes in many variants as used in different parts of the world! It also became popular with users once many tweaks and utilities became available for it including the DMT tool that provides advanced monitoring and configuration. Once the CLI is accessible with required credentials, many more options become available including bridge mode, wireless router only mode using one of the lan ports as a wan port, multi-pvc support and much more. It has a good modem supporting upto adsl2+ and still relevant for Pakistan! However, some of the ISPs preferred to have it locked down for various reasons and one may not find a 'generic' model easily! There is the option of using jtag to 'convert' the locked version into the generic one by flashing a modified cfe, but, there is also a much easier software based method provided you don't mind running older firmware and don't mind...
