Tip: USB Drives & Dust

As usb drives get bigger & bigger, you tend to store a lot of stuff on them to carry around making use of the protability. But, I don't know if you have noticed or not, as you keep moving your drives around, the contacts start to attract a lot of dust and all sorts of stuff. The usb ports have no protection from dust and the way they are designed and positioned makes it difficult to clean them especially when using shared computers in libraries or labs. Naturally, dusty areas will complement the problem. This can lead to a very shocking situation, in which, if you start copying your files from the usb to any other place, you can recieve a message that the file cannot be found ... you navigate to the drive's folder and there's nothing there ... don't panic ... just safely remove the drive and re-plug it ... you'll find the files there. So, here's what you can do:

1. Always keep the contacts of the usb connectors clean ... you can use a contact cleaner

2. Don't use cut & paste option as you can lose your data if the process is interrupted

3. For small files greater in number ... as in saved web-pages ... first zip the files ... it'll take less time to copy

Technicolor TG582n: Info, Configuration and Usage Options

Hi! DANT-T and DANT-1 variants DANT-T and DANT-1 variants The Technicolor TG582n ( quick specs , user guide ) seems to be quite popular with ISPs and can be found in branded, sometimes locked*, form throughout. Fortunately, it works really well once properly configured and it is (usually) easy to unlock by flashing it with an unlocked firmware. One thing to take into consideration is that it comes in two main variants, the DANT-1 and DANT-T, with each variant only accepting it's own firmware (unless you are installing OpenWRT ). Firmware Update: Now, when it comes to flashing the firmware, we need: (Windows 7 is recommended) - Thomson Upgrade Wizard   - User privileges (username and password for user authorized to flash firmware ... for some branded ones we don't need one once router has been reset but for some like O2 we need the user SuperUser with password the Serial Number of router) - (Unlocked/Generic) Firmware for the ...

PTCL's (newer) Wireless n 150mbps W150D xDSL Router by Tenda Part2

From the hardware point of view, the PTCL/Tenda W150D is not much different from other BCM6328 based routers but the difference surely lies in the software/firmware ... so let's take a look at the gui side of things ... From the start it was apparent that the firmware for PTCL was not 'special/locked' one and just used image replacement replacing Tenda's images/logos with those for PTCL ... anyways it also didn't seem to work well, felt kind of like a beta version of the firmware ... couldn't hold onto some settings ... my long line and difficult stats didn't help either (awaiting conversion from copper to fiber) ... so in desperation I looked at firmware updates for the router on Tenda's website knowing full well that a corrupted/interrupted/slightly-changed firmware update would brick the router with no obvious way to recover as serial & jTAG pinouts are not known (there are some test points ... but lack of interest) and no full flash backup c...

PTCL's W150D ADSL Wireless N150 Router with Micronet's SP3367NL Firmware - Screenshots

It's been a while since I updated this blog, but, I am planning to write down all the tech adventures I had during this time starting with routers! First up is the Tenda W150D mentioned previously, currently using firmware of Micronet (Taiwan) SP3367NL: Note: Despite the version string (1.0.0.7 vs 1.0.1) the newer firmware US_SP3367NL_V1.0.0.7_en_NUT.bin released in 2012 can be found at http://sdrv.ms/17IgVyp  though you might want to save your previous configuration before upgrading to restore later on new firmware as there can be problems enabling the wireless network in the v1.0.0.7 (it's just a configuration issue that may not occur but it's better to be prepared) (My upgrade path: PTCL's firmware->Tenda's Firmware->Micronet's Firmware) - The interface seems to be the same as the previous firmware, but, again it performs better than the version pre-installed by PTCL (ISP) Download SNR Margin is better than before ... though on fiber...
