TalkTalk D-Link DSL-3780: Info and Use with Other ISPs

Hi!

Security Alert: This router has been found vulnerable to Mirai worm. Here are some steps to try to prevent such attacks (disconnect the 'internet' cable and reboot first just in case):

1. Change default admin password if you haven't done so

(Change via Console is preferred)

2. Disable Remote Management (may prevent future updates though ... manual update would be needed if new firmware is released)

3. Remove additional users from config file (Advanced)
- Save the current router configuration via Maintenance tab from Advanced GUI to a PC

- Edit the config file for "Account" section and remove the extra users apart from admin by deleting the Entry1 and Entry2 sub-sections

Note: One can also change the default password for the admin user here if not already changed. Be sure to change the console password as well!

 <Account>
      <Entry0 username="admin" web_passwd="admin"
 console_passwd="admin" display_mask="DF FF F7 BF FF DF FF FF FF" />
      <Entry1
 username="qwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyuiopqwertyui"
 web_passwd="12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678"
 display_mask="D2 8C 84 8C 8C 8C 8C 8C 8C" />
      <Entry2 username="user3"
 web_passwd="12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678"
 display_mask="5E 8C 6 8C 8C 8C 8C 8C 8C" />
 </Account>

- Load the modified file back up to the router

4. Verify that ACL is blocking remote (WAN) access

Update: TalkTalk claims to have a temporary fix with the permanent fix via firmware update also available. More info at http://help2.talktalk.co.uk/miralwormupdate
--------------------------

Another router from D-Link (there is another similar looking model by Huawei) provided by TalkTalk (ISP from UK) that can be found here in excellent to sometimes mint condition as the model was replaced with a newer model in a short time period. Hardware wise, it seems to be a nice router but the user interface needs improvement.

Username Unlock:

The router is locked to TalkTalk as it accepts usernames with specific allowed-domains only, though, the other modes like IPoE that don't require authentication work well. Fortunatley, there is also a way to edit the configuration file to make the router accept any username allowing usage with other ISPs. Here is the process:

(To continue reading, please click on 'Read More')

 - Logging in at 192.168.1.1 with default username "admin" and password "admin" without quotes (after a reset to Factory Defaults)

 - Advanced Settings Tab

 - Configure as per ISP settings and Connection Type

- Including "@talktalk.net" to the desired username for own ISP without quotes makes the router accept and continue

- An editor like gVim or Notepad++ can be used to edit the file easily! Only need to remove the "@talktalk.net" part as shown below

- The custom username has been accepted and the router should connect to the required service! A restart of the router might be required initially to get the router to connect!

Note: The above configuration is for local ISP PTCL in Pakistan for users on ONU! Your settings may vary!

Here is a video showing the process as well as a connection test for WAN (Fibre) connection via a local pppoe server verifying the process:

Update: 04th March, 2017

After many requests, I tested the DSL-3780 router with PTCL especially with their SmartTV IPTV offering at somebody else's house as we have GPON now. The IPTV worked without any "extra" configuration other than configuring the PVC as required. Also, there is a hidden page to configure port bindings to limit the IPTV traffic/STB to one of the LAN ports (recommended) available at: http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/ADVANCED/ad_port_binding.asp

Note: The router took a longer time to boot and sync than the time the IPTV STB waited for a connection! Had to turn the STB on and off again after router had connected!

Here is an embedded video showing the IPTV working:

    1. Hello Again!

      Usb modem support depends upon compatibility (likely to be limited)! One can try by configuring 3g settings as per the settings provided by 3g operator! I'll try to test a 3g dongle as well and post the results!

  3. Thanks a lot for your cooperation. I had used vim and notepad++ . except this I save the config file and upload it (as it is) without any change but still the same error . perhaps it is security of my router's firmware.
    I have purchased talktalk dsl 3780 router to connect with zong modem evo with HEC package (nawaz sharif's laptop scheem). This evo works with PTCL DSL router automatically when it is connected in usb port . But it does not connect with talktalk DSL 3780 . Please tell me any solution to connect this evo with this router as soon as you can. I shall wait for your kind guidance.

    1. Hello Again!

      Kindly email me your details for dsl and the firmware version on your router (screenshot if possible)! I'll then be hopefully able to guide you better!

      Also, if possible, send me the configuration of the router that works for you (ptcl supplied router) usually available via the Backup Configuration Settings option. If the file is readable via a text editor, you might remove sensitive info like WiFi passwords, phone number and such!

      Regards,

    1. Hi!

      There seems to be support in the firmware due to presence of the USB_ModeSwitch utility, but, I haven't tested it with a 3G usb dongle. There is this file "usb_modeswitch.conf" that lists potentially compatible devices (the contents of the file can be viewed here!). If your device is on the list, you might try configuring the 3G dongle via the GUI as per the settings provided by your network operator!

    1. Hello!

      Kindly verify that the file extension has not been changed when saving the file. WindowsOS might not show file extensions by default so might have to take a look at the properties of the file.

      If it does not work, try backing up the configuration file from router again.

      Hope this helps!

    1. Hello!

      Shall try to acquire the 3782 model, but, currently have a FTTH connection. However, if the configuration file can be edited in a similar manner as to the one shown above, it should be possible to configure the 3782 router for the ISP using VDSL (provided the profiles used match).

    1. Hello!

      Kindly provide more information like:
      - when does the message show up ... using the wizard or while using manual setup
      - the firmware version
      - is the configuration file still text-based (not encrypted) ... once backed up

      Meanwhile, one can try:
      - to use a different web browser (with a different base to your current one ... chromium based browsers will likely show similar behaviour ... so try "older" IE)
      - to configure the router using the wizard after first resetting it to factory defaults
      - to edit the configuration file for VPI and VCI ... like in the case of changing the username as shown above

      Hope this helps!

      Regards,
      Ahmed

Technicolor TG582n: Info, Configuration and Usage Options

Hi! DANT-T and DANT-1 variants DANT-T and DANT-1 variants The Technicolor TG582n ( quick specs , user guide ) seems to be quite popular with ISPs and can be found in branded, sometimes locked*, form throughout. Fortunately, it works really well once properly configured and it is (usually) easy to unlock by flashing it with an unlocked firmware. One thing to take into consideration is that it comes in two main variants, the DANT-1 and DANT-T, with each variant only accepting it's own firmware (unless you are installing OpenWRT ). Firmware Update: Now, when it comes to flashing the firmware, we need: (Windows 7 is recommended) - Thomson Upgrade Wizard   - User privileges (username and password for user authorized to flash firmware ... for some branded ones we don't need one once router has been reset but for some like O2 we need the user SuperUser with password the Serial Number of router) - (Unlocked/Generic) Firmware for the

PTCL's (newer) Wireless n 150mbps W150D xDSL Router by Tenda Part2

From the hardware point of view, the PTCL/Tenda W150D is not much different from other BCM6328 based routers but the difference surely lies in the software/firmware ... so let's take a look at the gui side of things ... From the start it was apparent that the firmware for PTCL was not 'special/locked' one and just used image replacement replacing Tenda's images/logos with those for PTCL ... anyways it also didn't seem to work well, felt kind of like a beta version of the firmware ... couldn't hold onto some settings ... my long line and difficult stats didn't help either (awaiting conversion from copper to fiber) ... so in desperation I looked at firmware updates for the router on Tenda's website knowing full well that a corrupted/interrupted/slightly-changed firmware update would brick the router with no obvious way to recover as serial & jTAG pinouts are not known (there are some test points ... but lack of interest) and no full flash backup c

BT Home Hub v2 Type A: Info, Unlock & Configuration

Hello Again! Next up is the BT Home Hub v2* Type A home ADSL Wireless Router by Thomson/Technicolor (more info at OpenWRT wiki ). Again, this router accepts only BT specific/approved domain names for username of dsl and must be 'unlocked' to be used with other ISPs. Such 'unlocking' (thanks to btsimonh and Surreliz3) also allows more configuration options, though firmware upgrade options might become limited. As with the BTHH v1 & v1.5 , this router can be 'unlocked' via jTAG method but there is also the relatively easier software method provided the firmware version currently on the BTHHv2A is lower than version 8.1.H.U.  Unlock: I 'unlocked' mine via the software method a long time ago so I won't be able to post screenshots of the process (have yet to try the jtag method on one with newer firmware that I also happen to have), but, here is the process as described on the now defunct psidoc.com website (the links may
